RANAU: The public is urged to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of fires as the current El Niño weather phenomenon continues to bring prolonged hot and dry conditions across Sabah.
Ranau Fire and Rescue Department Chief PPgB Rantey Fred said the dry spell has significantly increased the likelihood of bush, grass and forest fires, as well as accidental fires involving homes and agricultural land.
He said even a small spark or unattended open burning could quickly develop into a large-scale fire due to the dry vegetation and strong winds experienced during the current weather conditions.
“During prolonged hot and dry weather, vegetation becomes highly combustible, making it easier for fires to spread rapidly. We therefore urge the public to exercise extra caution and avoid any activity that could trigger a fire,” he said.
Rantey reminded the public that open burning should be avoided unless specifically permitted by the relevant authorities, adding that burning rubbish, clearing land by fire or disposing of cigarette butts carelessly could have serious consequences.
He also advised farmers and smallholders to use safer methods for land clearing and to ensure that any controlled burning, where permitted, is carried out responsibly and under close supervision.
Apart from outdoor fire risks, he said households should also take extra precautions to prevent electrical fires, particularly during periods of increased electricity usage caused by the hot weather.
He advised homeowners to inspect electrical wiring regularly, avoid overloading extension sockets and ensure electrical appliances are switched off when not in use.
“Many fires can be prevented through simple safety practices. Check your electrical installations, ensure gas cylinders and cooking appliances are in good condition, and never leave cooking unattended,” he said.
Rantey also encouraged families to prepare an emergency response plan, including identifying safe evacuation routes, keeping emergency contact numbers readily available and ensuring children understand basic fire safety procedures.
He said residents living near forests, plantations or grasslands should remain alert to any signs of smoke or fire and immediately notify the Fire and Rescue Department if they detect any incident.
“Early reporting is crucial. The sooner we receive information, the faster our firefighters can respond before a small fire develops into a major emergency,” he said.
Rantey also called on community leaders, village committees and local residents to work together in promoting fire prevention awareness within their respective communities.
He said public cooperation remains one of the most effective ways to minimise fire incidents during the current dry season, adding that protecting lives, property and the environment is a shared responsibility.
The department also reminded the public to refrain from spreading unverified information regarding fire incidents on social media and, instead, to obtain updates from official government agencies.
“The Department will continue monitoring the situation closely while remaining on standby to respond to emergencies,” he said.
