An elderly couple perished in a Kudat house fire, while a visually impaired woman died in a Semporna blaze, both occurring within hours.

KUDAT: An elderly couple was found burnt to death after their house was destroyed in a fire at Kampung Lausan Batu 4 late yesterday.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said the victims, aged 73 and 74, were found in a bedroom of the two-storey non-permanent house, which was completely razed.

Firefighters received a distress call at 11.58 pm and rushed to the scene, arriving at 12.36 am today.

The blaze was brought under control about an hour later despite access difficulties caused by a narrow bridge and low power lines.

In a separate incident in Semporna, a visually impaired woman was found burnt to death in a fire involving seven squatter houses at Kampung Perigi today.

Semporna Fire and Rescue Station chief Rastam Keladi identified the victim as 58-year-old Munairaya Baluan.

She was found in the bedroom of one of the houses.

Firefighters received a call at 11.12 am and brought the blaze under control by 11.57 am. – Bernama
