
A SENIOR citizen was killed after the car he was driving veered into a closed worksite for electrical cable installation before being impaled by an iron rod along Jalan Thean Teik in Ayer Itam on Tuesday morning.
The victim, identified as Lim Soon Teik, 67, from Paya Terubong, suffered severe injuries to the head and face and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred at about 9.30am when the Toyota Vios driven by the victim allegedly entered a lane that had been closed for cable installation works, causing the vehicle to plunge into an excavation pit.
An iron rod is believed to have pierced the car from underneath, penetrating through the roof of the vehicle.
Northeast district deputy police chief Superintendent Lee Swee Sake confirmed that the victim died at the scene and said police would be issuing a media statement on the incident shortly.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations division assistant director John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at 9.37am.
He said the rescue operation was carried out by a team from the Paya Terubong Fire and Rescue Station led by operations commander Zurizan Mohd Yusof.
“The task of extricating the victim was carried out by the rescue team before the case was handed over to the police for further action.
