Elderly man drowns after 4WD plunges into Sarawak River

A 62-YEAR-old man was found drowned inside his vehicle after it plunged into the Sarawak River late last night in the Kuching district of southern Sarawak.

The four-wheel drive pick-up truck is believed to have veered off the riverbank road and crashed through the railings at around 10pm.

Witnesses at the scene alerted emergency services, prompting a search operation by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.

“Our diving teams could not locate the vehicle last night,” said a department spokesperson. “This morning, an oil spill was detected, and divers located the vehicle on the riverbed and found the driver trapped in the seat. His body had been recovered and taken to shore.”

The deceased has been identified as Lim Boon Hua.

Kuching district police chief Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that investigations are ongoing and urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the cause of the incident. - May 15, 2025
