AN elderly man suspected of being involved in the distribution of illicit cigarettes was arrested during a police operation at a terraced house in Klang, Selangor, yesterday, leading to the seizure of untaxed tobacco products worth an estimated RM320,000.

The suspect, believed to be in his 60s, was detained at about 2.30pm in Op Taring Alpha 1, a joint operation carried out by the intelligence branch of the General Operations Force Battalion 4 in Semenyih and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Klang Selatan district police headquarters.

Battalion 4 commanding officer Superintendent Amanjit Singh said the raid resulted in the seizure of 750 cartons of white cigarettes believed to have been distributed without customs duty having been paid.

A Nissan Almera vehicle, suspected to have been used in the distribution activity, was also confiscated.

“The total value of the seizure from the operation is estimated at RM320,000,” he said in a statement today.

“The suspect and all seized items have been taken to the Klang Selatan district police headquarters for further investigation under the Customs Act 1967,” he added.

Amanjit said initial investigations found that the suspect was working as an employee and that the cigarettes were intended for distribution in the Klang Valley and other parts of Selangor.

“The modus operandi involved using a residential house as a storage facility before the cigarettes were distributed using a vehicle,” he said.

He also urged members of the public to cooperate with the authorities by providing information on any activities suspected to be in breach of the law. - December 25, 2025
