AN elderly man was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court in Kuala Terengganu today after being convicted of sexually assaulting two seven-year-old girls in 2023.
The presiding judge, Mohd Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli, ruled that the prosecution had proven the case against 64-year-old Mohammed Rashid Rahmat beyond a reasonable doubt.
The court ordered that he serve four years in prison with one stroke of the cane for the first offence, followed by another four-year prison term and one stroke of the cane for the second offence, with a two-year police supervision period after completing his sentences.
Mohammed Rashid was accused of committing the assaults along the corridor of a temporary evacuation centre at a primary school in Kuala Nerus between 6pm and 8pm on November 22, 2023, under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Nabihah Hanin Ayim led the prosecution, while Mohammed Rashid was represented by lawyer Masliela Ismail.
The ruling underscores the judiciary’s firm stance on protecting children from sexual offences and ensuring that offenders face severe legal consequences. - February 23, 2026
