ALOR SETAR: An elderly woman and her three-year-old grandniece were killed in a road accident while on their way to school this morning.

The victims, identified as 76-year-old Che Ramlah Abdul Karim and Auni Afiqah Hadi, died at the scene from severe injuries sustained in the crash along Jalan Padang Sanai near Kampung Padang Nyior.

A nine-year-old boy, Abdul Hafiz Hadi, who was also in the vehicle, was injured and taken to Kuala Nerang Hospital for treatment.

Padang Terap district deputy police chief DSP Affzanisham Mohammad Sham said police received a distress call at 6.55 am regarding a collision between a Toyota Avanza and a motorcycle.

Preliminary investigations indicate the Avanza was travelling from Kampung Lubuk Labi towards Ladang Seraya when the accident occurred at approximately 6.45 am.

The motorcycle, coming from the opposite direction, is believed to have been overtaking another vehicle before entering the Avanza’s lane and causing a head-on collision.

The motorcycle rider and pillion rider were both pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured boy was the pillion rider on the Avanza.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Forensic Department at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem examinations.
