Elderly woman killed and five others injured after Tesla crashes into California cafe

  • A 79-year-old woman was killed and five people were injured when a Tesla crashed into an Urbane Cafe patio in Simi Valley, Southern California, on Monday afternoon.
  • The white Tesla, driven by a 64-year-old woman, veered onto the sidewalk while attempting a right-hand turn, striking the elderly pedestrian.
  • Emergency responders found the victim trapped under the vehicle when they arrived at the scene outside a Target shopping center, ABC7 reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining significant injuries, Simi Valley Police said in a statement.
  • Investigators are working to determine if the crash was caused by mechanical failure or driver impairment, but they do not believe it was deliberate, nor do they suspect drugs or alcohol were factors, Simi Valley PoliceSergeant Rick Morton told ABC7.
  • This incident follows another recent fatal Tesla crash in Texas where a 76-year-old woman was killed when a Model 3 on "autopilot" ran into her home.
