
TRAGEDY struck Jalan Lembah Permai in Tanjung Tokong late on Sunday when a 67-year-old woman lost her life after being hit by a sport utility vehicle.
The incident occurred at approximately 11.30 pm, with the victim confirmed dead at the scene after being thrown onto the road by the force of the collision.
Northeast District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad, said the accident involved the elderly pedestrian and an SUV driven by a 51-year-old foreign national.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the SUV was travelling from Jalan Mount Erskine towards Jalan Tanjung Bungah when it collided with the woman, who was crossing the road from left to right,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Abdul Rozak added that the impact caused the woman to be flung intot the air, sustaining severe injuries that proved fatal at the scene.
Alcohol screening conducted on the SUV driver indicated that he was suspected of exceeding the legal limit while driving.
“As a result, the driver has been arrested and will be remanded to assist with further investigations,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous driving causing death. - January 5, 2025
