An 81-year-old woman died after being hit by a car in a George Town hit-and-run; police still looking for the driver, who has yet to come forward.

GEORGE TOWN: An elderly woman died after she was believed to have been knocked down by a car in a hit-and-run incident in the parking area of Desa Green Apartments here today.

Timur Laut district police chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 81-year-old local victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to head injuries.

He said based on preliminary investigations, the incident occurred at 2.20 pm when the victim alighted from an e-hailing vehicle and was walking towards her residential block before tripping and falling onto the road.

“After that, a car was believed to have moved straight ahead and hit the victim before the driver fled the scene,” Abdul Rozak said in a statement today.

He said that so far, the driver of the car believed to be involved in the accident has not come forward to file a police report, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He requested members of the public who have information about the incident to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Irwandy Hamled, at 013-5155656 to assist with the investigation.
