Kamala Harris will officially announce her choice of running mate on Tuesday morning, according to CBS News, after formally clinching her party’s nomination for the presidency at midnight on Monday.
Her pool of vice presidential contenders is understood to have narrowed to just Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, according to Reuters.
Harris is expected to announce her choice today ahead of the victor’s first rally appearance alongside her in Philadelphia, although the timing of the unveiling may change depending on when she makes her final decision or if there’s a leak to the press.
Shapiro, Walz and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly all interviewed at Harris’s residence in Washington DC on Sunday, with the former astronaut subsequently tweeting and then deleting a post shortly afterwards in which he declared, “Now my mission is serving Arizonans,” seemingly suggesting he is no longer in contention.
Republican candidate Donald Trump was interviewed by YouTube personality Adin Ross on Monday, who presented him with a Rolex watch and giftwrapped Tesla Cybertruck during a livestream, after losing his latest attempt to have the US Supreme Court block his sentencing in the New York hush money case against him.

How will Harris announce her VP pick – and when?

We’re expecting an emailed statement and concurrent social media announcement, probably by video, at some point today announcing Harris’ final decision on her running mate, which, as we’ve seen, looks like being either Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro or Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
The news will have to break in good time for this evening’s rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – where Shapiro could presumably expect a hero’s welcome – which kicks off at 5.30pm local time (10.30pm GMT).
It’s taking place at Temple University’s Liacouras Center in the north of the city, a venue which claims to have up to 10,000 seats and is the largest indoor public assembly venue north of City Hall at 340,000 square feet.
After tonight, Harris and her running mate will “crisscross the country, traveling to battleground states to meet voters where they are and highlight the stakes of this election”, according to a statement from her campaign.
That whistle stop tour will take them, over the next five days, to Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Detroit, Michigan; The Research Triangle in North Carolina; Phoenix, Arizona; and Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Republican told Adin Ross that he would like to “fire” ABC News journalist Rachel Scott, who grilled him about his past comments about race during a panel at the National Association of Black Journalists convention last week.
During his appearance on Ross’s livestream on Kick on Monday, Trump was asked for his reaction to the event, which his campaign appeared to cut short by 30 minutes when it was clear that he led the session off the rails.
“This woman starts talking… about racism, and I said, ‘You didn’t even say hello to me,’ and I’m doing them a favor by doing this,” Trump told Ross on Monday.
“I’m doing this out of respect to the Black community.”
Scott has since said she has received death threats in the wake of Trump’s embarrassment at the event.

Supreme Court dismisses Republican challenge to delay Trump’s hush money sentencing
10:30
Joe Sommerlad
Donald Trump’s sentencing in his hush money trial won’t be delayed by a long-shot lawsuit from Missouri’s Republican attorney general, whose challenge to a gag order against the former president was dismissed by the Supreme Court.
The challenge from Andrew Bailey argued that a gag order and a potential jail sentence against the Republican presidential nominee amounted to election interference and would deprive Missouri voters from hearing the candidate before they cast their ballots.
Justices denied that challenge in a brief order on Monday.
The order also noted that Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas would have allowed Bailey to at least file the suit, but would not have granted him his requested emergency relief.

A man in Virginia is facing charges after he allegedly made threats online that he would kill Vice President Kamala Harris and other public figures, including Joe Biden and FBI Director Christopher Wray.
Frank Lucio Carillo, 66, was arrested for threatening to kill Harris, who is the presumptive Democratic presidential party nominee in the 2024 election, according to a pair of court filings made on August 2.
His first court appearance was scheduled for Monday.
“Kamala Harris needs to be put on fire alive I will do it personally if no one else does it I want her to suffer a slow agonizing death,” Carillo allegedly said in a social media post flagged by the FBI. The post was made on the right-wing social media platform GETTR, according to investigators.

No, JD Vance is not as bad of a running mate as Sarah Palin. He’s worse
04:30
Eric Garcia
As Vice President Kamala Harris continues to keep all of Washington on its toes about which white boy she will select as her running mate, Donald Trump’s campaign is dispatching his running mate — Senator JD Vance of Ohio — for counterprogramming.
Vance will be in Philadelphia on Tuesday, where Harris will make her first appearance alongside her running mate at a rally. Then, Vance will follow her to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, before he trails her to North Carolina.
The tour serves two purposes: Firstly, it allows for Vance to assume the common role of the running mate as the “attack dog” who can hurl javelins that the principal cannot do; secondly, it serves as Vance’s reintroduction to the public after a rocky rollout as Trump’s number-two.

His wife insisted in the interview that his remarks — which faced renewed criticism after he joined the ticket as Trump’s vice presidential nominee — were simply about the challenges parents face and what role the government plays in the lives of parents.

After two weeks of quibbling over “childless cat ladies”, one Republican Senate candidate is ready to say it: the top of his party’s ticket has a problem with women.
Donald Trump and JD Vance head into August beset by a number of problems: the sudden withdrawal of Trump’s main opponent, Joe Biden, and the elevation of Kamala Harris as the new Democratic nominee, for starters. But through the end of July, in the days following the GOP convention in Milwaukee, much of the coverage surrounding the Republican ticket has concerned past comments made by Vance, the vice presidential nominee.
In those comments, some made quite recently before he officially entered political life, Vance repeatedly railed against “childless” women who supposedly run America (and particularly, he argued, the Democratic Party).

Arizona prosecutors will drop nine felony charges against Donald Trump’s former attorney Jenna Ellis in exchange for her cooperation in a sweeping election interference case in the state.
Ellis, who reached a plea deal with prosecutors in Georgia in a similar case last year, was among 18 defendants in an investigation into a Republican-backed plan to subvert Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state and deliver the state’s 11 electoral college votes to Trump instead.
“This agreement represents a significant step forward in our case,” Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a statement on Monday.
“I am grateful to Ms Ellis for her cooperation with our investigation and prosecution. Her insights are invaluable and will greatly aid the State in proving its case in court,” Mayes added. “As I stated when the initial charges were announced, I will not allow American democracy to be undermined — it is far too important. Today’s announcement is a win for the rule of law.”

Speaking to Maria Bartiroma on Fox’s Sunday Morning Futures yesterday, the former president slammed United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain as a “stupid person” for backing Kamala Harris, threatening to deepen the divide between his camp and the American auto sector he is proposing to revitalize.
“We’re going to take in a fortune, but we’re going to tariff those jobs,” Trump told Bartiroma.
“We want them to build auto plants in the United States. Those people in Michigan that love me and that I love, and then they’re going to give us a victory because their auto industry won’t exist in two years if [Harris] gets elected.
“They’ve got to build in the United States, and they have to hire US workers and whether it’s union or non-union… Look, the United Auto Workers I know very well, they vote for me. They have a stupid person leading them, but they vote for me. They’re going to love Donald Trump more than ever before.
“We’re going to create in that area, the most traditional area, we’re going to have more auto jobs than we’ve ever had. We’re bringing back the automobile industry, and we’re going to do that with tariffs.”
I think this might be the sort of post that upsets Trump...
