Embers from first Wisma Jakel fire possibly sparked second blaze: Fire Dept

SHAH ALAM – The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department is considering the embers from the first fire as a cause of the second fire at Wisma Jakel in Section 7 here early this morning.

Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis said that the investigation will focus on all aspects and be in-depth.

“We are still investigating the matter and looking at what we need to analyse. Maybe the embers were somehow left behind, or someone went up to burn the place.

“No conclusions can be made yet about this second fire,” he told reporters at the scene of the fire at Wisma Jakel today.

Norazam said the department needed 14 days to carry out preliminary investigations and analysis, including obtaining witnesses to the incident.

Norazam said the department today mobilised the services of the K9 unit, with two English springer spaniels named Woody and Rocco to detect any substance that could cause a fire.

“Samples will be sent to our investigation laboratory in Bukit Jelutong for analysis. The wiring and electrical equipment used in the Wisma Jakel building will also be analysed,” he said.

Norazam said that he opened a forward control centre today comprising more than 10 personnel, as a monitoring and precautionary measure in case of a recurring fire.

“Thus far, the fire has been completely put out, but comprehensive monitoring measures are still ongoing,” he said.

He said members of the public are also barred from entering the area where the incident took place, unless under supervision of the authorities.

“Firefighters, with the help of Jakel employees, will unload all the goods, especially fabric that survived the fire, from the Wisma Jakel premises, starting today,” he said.

Wisma Jakel suffered a second fire today, this time affecting the curtain fabric storage room at the premises. 43 firemen were mobilised to the scene after the department received a distress call at 12.40am. The fire was completely doused at 3.07am.

The first fire broke out at the Wisma Jakel building two days ago. It was believed to have started at about 7.08am and destroyed 80% of the three-storey shoplot. – Bernama, January 3, 2023
