Fair Treatment and Inclusion: Nurturing Unity in Selangor through Festival Decorations In the diverse and multi-racial state of Selangor, it is imperative for local municipal authorities to uphold fairness and equitable treatment of all communities.

Festive decorations, often seen in urban areas, serve as a visual expression of gratitude from the local authorities to the residents and ratepayers. These vibrant displays, commonly showcased during Christmas, New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali, enliven public spaces and foster a sense of community spirit.

Such gestures bridge the gap between the people and their local administrators, facilitating the creation of lively and engaged communities. Additionally, festive banners and buntings, with messages of appreciation, are often put up by Members of Parliament (MPs) and state representatives as a means of thanking the voters who elected them.

These acts of recognition and celebration are commendable, underscoring the importance of communal harmony and national unity through open house gatherings organized by the state and federal governments for major Malaysian festivals. However, there have been instances where local municipal authorities fall short in treating all festivals with equal importance, leading to complaints and perceptions of discrimination.

Given that Islam is the official religion and the significance attributed to Hari Raya Puasa, the festive decorations associated with this occasion naturally hold prominence. Nevertheless, it should not overshadow other festivals, such as Christmas, that hold significance to Christian and non-Muslim communities.

Regrettably, it has been observed that decorations for Christmas are often given less attention in Selangor. The absence of festive adornments in public areas, particularly around prominent intersections, roundabouts, main streets, churches, and other places of worship, may elicit feelings of discrimination among non-Muslims. By adorning these spaces, a vibrant and celebratory ambiance can be created, evoking a sense of joy and goodwill among residents.

It is essential for all local authorities, based on their respective demographics, to allocate funds and efforts towards lighting up and decorating public urban areas during the major festivals. Even in a developed, affluent, and diverse state like Selangor, these instances of prejudiced neglect call for urgent attention from the administration.

The local government executive councillor ought to monitor the situation closely and ensure that all municipal authorities fulfill, at the very least, the minimum requirements in terms of festival decorations. Furthermore, MPs and state assemblypersons can play a crucial role by voicing their concerns and advocating for fair treatment when they witness such disparities within their constituencies.

Through collaborative efforts between elected representatives and administrative bodies, strides can be made towards eradicating these unwarranted biases. In doing so, Selangor can truly embody the values of inclusivity, communal harmony, and national solidarity.

Moving forward, it is imperative for local authorities to recognize the importance of fair and unbiased treatment of all communities during religious festivals. By embracing diversity and fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity, Selangor can become a shining example of unity in the face of diversity, ultimately strengthening the social fabric of the state.
