In an incident on the Pasir Gudang Highway, a motorist who obstructed the path of an ambulance has now been slapped with a fine. The Seri Alam district police chief, Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak, revealed that the police became aware of the incident through a 47-second video circulating on social media at 3:30 pm yesterday.
The video captured a Toyota Hiace van willfully obstructing the ambulance's progress, despite the blaring siren and flashing lights. The ambulance had to navigate around the white van using the left lane. Subsequently, the Seri Alam District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division took swift action, tracking down the 38-year-old driver and issuing a RM300 fine.
The penalty was imposed under Rule 9(2) of the Road Traffic Rules 166/59, which pertains to refusing to yield to emergency vehicles like police vehicles, ambulances, Fire and Rescue Department vehicles, Prisons Department vehicles, Customs Department vehicles, and Road Transport Department vehicles.
Additionally, the driver faced an investigation under Section 56(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for not possessing a Goods Driving Licence (GDL). Further scrutiny revealed that the 38-year-old had accumulated seven summonses for various traffic offenses, although no criminal offenses were recorded against him.
This incident highlights the importance of respecting emergency vehicles on the road and the serious consequences that can result from obstructing their path. Such actions not only endanger lives but also violate traffic rules designed to ensure the swift and unimpeded movement of vehicles responding to emergencies.
The issuance of the fine serves as a reminder that law enforcement is actively monitoring and responding to instances of road obstruction, especially concerning emergency services. It underscores the commitment to uphold traffic regulations and maintain a safe environment for all road users. As individuals navigate the roadways, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of others and adhere to traffic rules, particularly when emergency vehicles are in transit.
