Emmys suffer major ratings blow as viewing figures fall almost 10 per cent

Viewing figures for the Emmy Awards have dropped by almost 10 per cent compared to last year, ending a brief two-year recovery in audience numbers.

Network figures published on Tuesday showed that approximately 6.7 million people watched the 78th primetime ceremony, which was broadcast by NBC.

The ceremony, presented by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actor Mariska Hargitay, was dominated by Apple TV’s Widow's Bay, which scooped a record-breaking 14 awards for a comedy series. Meanwhile, The Pitt secured the best drama title for a second consecutive year.

Organisers faced fierce competition for viewers on Monday night, with ESPN broadcasting the opening Monday Night Football fixture of the season between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos.

By comparison, the ceremony attracted an estimated 6.87 million viewers when shown on ABC in 2024, following a 7.42 million audience for CBS the previous year.

Nevertheless, this year’s total remained well above the record low of 4.3 million recorded during Fox’s January 2024 broadcast, which suffered a multi-month delay amid Hollywood's industry-wide writers' and actors' strikes.

Coverage of the event cycles each year across four major television networks.

The Emmys consistently trail behind rival awards galas, attracting less than half the audience of the Oscars or Grammys and falling substantially short of the Golden Globes.

Scheduled regularly in September, the broadcast inevitably clashes with American football, which remains one of the few live televised events capable of sustaining massive national viewing figures.

To accommodate NBC's broadcast of Sunday Night Football, the ceremony shifted from Sunday to Monday evening, as is standard practice for the channel. This decision placed the telecast in direct competition with ESPN’s football coverage, while depriving the network of a sports lead-in to boost viewer numbers beforehand.

In the modern era of streaming and prestige television, critical acclaim does not guarantee vast audiences for nominated shows. During the 1990s, series like Seinfeld and ER combined critical success and Emmy victories with huge viewing figures, a feat that current winners such as Widow’s Bay and The Pitt fail to replicate.

The Emmys last crossed the 10 million milestone in 2018, drawing an audience of 10.2 million. At the turn of the century in 2000, the ceremony generated almost 22 million viewers—a height the broadcast is unlikely to reach ever again.
