Deputy Prime Minister Advocates for Fair Wages for Contract Preachers
In a bid to support the tireless efforts of contract preachers, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has proposed a significant increase in their allowances under the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM). His call to action seeks to ensure that these dedicated individuals receive compensation at least equivalent to the minimum wage, acknowledging the vital role they play in the propagation of Islam and the assistance they provide to Muslim converts (Mualaf) in remote and rural areas.
Speaking to the media during the opening of the National MADANI Mualaf Convention 2023, held in Bangi, Ahmad Zahid highlighted the need for this allowance adjustment. He emphasized that while contract preachers were once categorized as volunteers in dakwah activities, Jakim had taken commendable steps to formalize their status through contractual agreements. However, the allowances provided to them remain significantly low in comparison to the nature and importance of their work.
Expanding the Scope: A Call to Action for State Religious Councils
Ahmad Zahid's proposal extends beyond Jakim; he urges state religious councils and departments to follow suit by increasing the allowances for their respective contract preachers. The aim is to create a more equitable system that recognizes the dedication and essential role of these individuals, who often serve in challenging conditions and contribute significantly to the religious education and spiritual development of their communities.
Acknowledging the Value of Contract Preachers
The call for increased allowances for contract preachers signifies a growing awareness of their invaluable contributions to society. These preachers are at the forefront of dakwah activities, striving to propagate Islamic teachings and support Muslim converts, especially in underserved and remote regions. Their work includes providing spiritual guidance, counseling, and educational support, making them integral to the growth and stability of the Muslim community.
Challenges Faced by Contract Preachers
The challenges faced by contract preachers cannot be understated. Many of them endure financial hardships due to low allowances, which often fail to cover their basic needs. This financial strain can negatively impact their ability to carry out their duties effectively. By raising their allowances to at least the minimum wage level, the government aims to alleviate some of the economic burdens faced by these dedicated individuals, allowing them to focus more fully on their mission.
Religious Minister's Response
When questioned about the proposal, Religious Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Dr. Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, affirmed that Jakim had taken note of the deputy prime minister’s recommendation. He further elaborated that the majority of contract preachers under Jakim and non-governmental organizations operating under the Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah currently do not receive fixed allowances or salaries.
Strengthening Islamic Education for Mualaf and Orang Asli
In his welcoming address at the MADANI Mualaf Convention, Mohd Na'im emphasized the importance of continuously enhancing programs aimed at improving understanding of Islam among mualaf (converts) and Orang Asli (indigenous peoples). He highlighted the necessity of religious classes focusing on aqidah (faith), syariah (Islamic law), and ethics. These classes, he emphasized, should be conducted with dedication and in an engaging, interactive manner.
Moreover, Mohd Na'im recognized the changing landscape of communication technology and its impact on the dissemination of Islamic knowledge. He stressed the need for Islamic affairs agencies to adapt and increase their presence on social media platforms to effectively reach a wider audience and address the evolving needs of the community.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's proposal to increase the allowances for contract preachers represents a significant step towards recognizing and supporting their invaluable contributions to the Islamic community. By offering fair compensation, the government aims to alleviate financial burdens and empower these individuals to continue their vital work of spreading Islamic teachings and providing assistance to those in need. This initiative reflects a commitment to strengthening Islamic education and promoting a deeper understanding of Islam among mualaf and Orang Asli, ensuring a more inclusive and enlightened society for all.
