An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Rajouri district of the Jammu region on Saturday, officials said.

Officials said a cordon and search operation was launched in the Gambhir Mughlan area of Rajouri, during which an exchange of fire took place.

The Army’s White Knight Corps said on X that contact with terrorists was established around 11.30 am on Saturday in the general area of Gambhir Mughlan.

The Army said the operation was launched during an intelligence-based joint operation conducted along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF.

“Troops responded swiftly with calibrated action. A firefight ensued and a cordon has been effectively established,” the Army said, adding that the operation was still underway.

Officials said additional reinforcements had been rushed to the area and the entire region had been cordoned off to ensure the trapped ultras did not escape.

Over the years, militants have shifted their battleground from the Kashmir Valley to the mountainous forests of Jammu, leading to a spike in deadly attacks and forcing security agencies to revisit their counter-insurgency strategy.

Jammu and Kashmir Police recently constituted a special team of personnel trained in high-altitude warfare. The personnel from the Special Operations Group (SOG), the elite anti-terror wing of the J&K Police, have been specially trained to combat militancy in forested and mountainous areas.
