Engineer caught on camera poisoning co-worker’s drink with cancer-causing metal

New surveillance footage shows a chemical engineer poisoning his co-worker’s water bottle with cadmium, a metal deemed carcinogenic to humans, in an 18-month-long campaign that caused her serious ill health.

David Xu was caught by Rong Yuan after she set up a hidden camera on her desk at Berkeley Engineering and Research in California in 2019 after experiencing unexplained ill-health starting in 2017.

Xu was originally arrested in March 2019 on charges of attempted murder and poisoning but later agreed a plea deal for a single felony count of poisoning and received two years probation.

Yuan released the surveillance video this weekend as Xu seeks to formally dismiss the felony conviction under California’s expungement statute after completing his probation.
