Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's frustration with the justice system, as expressed in his recent statement, sheds light on concerns about the fairness and transparency of investigations conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). His claim of political victimization raises important questions about the integrity of the process.

Dr Mahathir's assertion that he requested evidence for allegations made against him and his family but faced delays and obstacles in obtaining it warrants serious consideration. In any justice system, the principle of innocent until proven guilty should guide investigations, and evidence should be presented promptly to ensure a fair trial.

The recent notice served to businessman Mirzan Mahathir by MACC, based on information from the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers, adds another layer to the complexity of the situation. While it is crucial to address allegations of corruption and money laundering, it is equally important to ensure that the investigations are conducted impartially and without any hint of political influence.

The concern expressed by Hassan Karim, a member of one of the oversight panels of MACC, is valid.

The claim that Dr Mahathir's son faced threats of a five-year jail term raises alarms about the conduct of investigations and the potential misuse of power. As Malaysia strives for transparency and accountability, it is imperative that all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, are treated fairly in the eyes of the law.

The Pandora Papers reportedly contain names of various individuals, including government supporters, yet Dr Mahathir alleges that not all of them have been investigated or charged. This raises questions about the consistency of the MACC's actions and whether there is selective enforcement.

In light of these concerns, it is crucial for MACC to uphold its mandate professionally and adhere strictly to the law. Any perception of bias or unfair treatment erodes public trust in the anti-corruption efforts and the justice system as a whole.

As the investigation unfolds, Malaysians will be closely watching how MACC handles these cases. The goal should be justice served impartially, free from political interference, and in accordance with the principles of the rule of law.

This is essential for maintaining the integrity of the anti-corruption efforts and fostering a society where accountability prevails over political considerations.
