In the process, upon retirement from corporate sector after serving more than four decades, whilst sharing my work-life experience lecturing with several graduate business schools in Malaysia, I met IUE preceding President Dr. James (Jim) Omps & President Dr. Pauline Crawford in KL. It would have been very hard to miss him. Jim's energy was kinetic as a western country singer and a keyboard professional musician. I remember his philosophical narrative, “Imagine your life as two superhighways. One courses with the stuff you're very good at, the other with the stuff you really love to do. Now, imagine those superhighways intersecting. Right there - at the overlap of your capabilities and your happiness - lies the site where ideally you should build your career.”
Whoa, right? Who does that?
I remember my classmates, a medical doctor who quits his job at a government hospital to become a photographer? The corporate senior executive who jumps ship to run a museum & go into academia? The basic narrative is always the same too, years or decades of “captivity”, traded in for a second chance at living authentically, topped off with a moral of the story about doing what they love. Such unique stories of reinvention, of course, are to be applauded. Similarly, trying on different jobs (even industries) for a couple of years before settling on a career trajectory is normal & necessary. It's healthy exploration.
Jim said, “Entrepenology is a study and mindset of entrepreneurial journey, shifting focus from traditional business mechanics to lived human experience, resilience, and wisdom. While entrepreneurship is the practical process of building and running a business, entreprenology goes beyond it by examining the underlying principles, mindsets and intrinsic life lessons behind a person. This emerging discipline combines knowledge, experience & imagination.”
I've learned it with IUE that instead of relying solely on standard academic theories or corporate training, entreprenology validates real-world adaptation, sustainable value creation, and community wellbeing. It treats an individuals life journey and work experience as a living library and the area of destiny.
