Environment Dept denies ignoring Orang Asli complaint of pollution

PUTRAJAYA – The Environment Department today denied a news portal report claiming that it had ignored a complaint lodged by an Orang Asli representative over pollution at Sg Menintei, Gua Musang.

Director-General Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said the news report was untrue because investigations found that the complainant had not submitted any applications for its officials to conduct water sample analyses, as alleged.

“The article published on December 27 claimed that the application submitted by Jimi Angah, the customary land chairman of Kg Kuala Wias and Kg Wok, was not attended to by department officials.

“However, the investigation revealed that the complainant actually met with the consultant of the environmental impact assessment report (EIA) on December 11 and not department officers,” he said in a statement today.

According to him, a review of the EIA consultant's fieldwork form signed by the complainant also showed no request from Jimi for the department to conduct sampling analyses.

Meanwhile, Wan Abdul Latiff said a water quality reading the department conducted at Sg Menintei yesterday found the water containing conductivity of 59 μS/cm, salinity of 0.03, dissolved oxygen at 96.7%, with a pH of 7.7, noting that based on the National Water Quality Standards, the water condition is clean. – Bernama, December 30, 2022
