Enzo Maresca defends VAR after backlash over Erling Haaland’s Manchester derby winner

  • Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca described the heavy focus on Erling Haaland's controversial winner in the Manchester derby as "quite poor", insisting his team's "unbelievable" effort deserved more credit.
  • City secured a 1-0 victory despite playing with 10 men for over 70 minutes after Phil Foden was sent off for kicking out at Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes.
  • Refereeing body Pro Ref subsequently admitted to an “error of judgement” in allowing Haaland's goal, as Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position and interfering with play.
  • Maresca offered sympathy to match officials including VAR over quick decision-making while recalling a similar controversial offside goal allowed for Manchester United in January 2023 for which City received no apology.
  • Ahead of City's Carabao Cup fixture against Norwich on Thursday, Maresca confirmed squad rotation involving several academy players and indicated the club has no plans to appeal Foden's red card.
