Old Uncle looked up from polishing his coffee cups.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" he announced. "Tonight, history will be made. Boomers versus Gen Z and Gen Alpha! Winner gets free kopi O for one week."
The kopitiam erupted in cheers.
Three elderly men shuffled dramatically through the entrance.
The crowd gasped.
Ah Hock had transformed himself into Jinjang Joe - bright floral shirt, oversized sunglasses, thick gold chain, slicked-back hair and enough hair gel to survive a typhoon.
He pointed two fingers into the air.
"Street style, 1978!"
Muniandy arrived wearing a colourful shirt, dark sunglasses and an enormous fake moustache.
"Macha," he declared proudly. "Original model. Vintage edition."
Ali burst through the door in torn jeans, leather jacket and a bandana.
"Mat Rock never dies!" he shouted, striking a guitar pose despite carrying no guitar.
The younger generation - nieces, nephews and grandchildren - entered laughing.
They wore baggy streetwear, sneakers and wireless earbuds.
One of the nephews whispered, "Uncle... do they know this isn't a costume party?"
Another replied, "Shhh... let them have their moment."
Old Uncle clapped.
"Round One!"
The speakers blasted...
'Play That Funky Music' - Wild Cherry.
The three old friends exploded onto the dance floor.
Ah Hock attempted disco finger-pointing.
Muniandy unveiled dance moves last seen during the Disco Era.
Ali tried spinning on one foot.
His knee immediately made a sound like someone cracking coconuts.
"KRRAAAK!"
He froze.
"My suspension gone!"
The crowd applauded anyway.
The Gen Z and Gen Alpha team responded.
The music suddenly switched to the latest viral TikTok hit.
Within seconds they were perfectly synchronised.
One granddaughter launched into the APT Dance.
A young boy started doing the Floss at lightning speed.
Another nephew bounced across the floor performing the Orange Justice, looking as though his bones had been replaced with rubber bands.
The three old heroes stared in complete silence.
"What are they doing?" whispered Ah Hock.
"I think they're buffering," said Muniandy.
Ali nodded thoughtfully.
"No... they're downloading."
Ah Hock scratched his head.
"Last time dancing meant following the music. Now it looks like everyone's fighting invisible mosquitoes."
Round Two.
The Boomers refused to surrender.
Ah Hock attempted the Moonwalk.
Instead, his shoes walked.
He didn't.
Muniandy attempted a body wave.
Only his stomach participated.
Ali tried a breakdance spin.
He successfully broke...
...his reading glasses.
The DJ increased the volume.
The youngsters answered with even more APT, Floss, and Orange Justice moves, perfectly synchronised as though they all shared the same Wi-Fi password.
The old men refused to admit defeat.
"Increase volume!"
"More disco!"
"Bring ABBA!"
"Bee Gees!"
"Earth, Wind & Fire!"
Soon every uncle and auntie in the kopitiam had joined the dance floor.
Nobody knew who was competing anymore.
One auntie accidentally hit another with her handbag.
Someone's dentures flew through the air.
A wig landed in someone's teh tarik.
Outside...
A passing motorist thought a riot had started.
Five police patrol cars arrived.
Then came the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) in full riot gear.
The commander burst through the doors.
"Everybody stop dancing!"
Nobody heard him.
Wild Cherry was too loud.
The FRU officers looked at each other.
One quietly put down his shield.
"...Actually... this song is quite good."
Thirty seconds later...
The riot police were doing disco.
The crowd cheered.
Then reality struck.
Ali grabbed his lower back.
"My gearbox!"
Ah Hock clutched both knees.
"My warranty expired!"
Muniandy collapsed into a chair.
"I need oxygen... and three teh tarik."
An ambulance screeched to a halt outside.
The paramedics rushed in.
"What happened?"
Old Uncle sighed.
"Three senior citizens challenged Gen Z and Gen Alpha to a dance battle."
The lead medic looked at the exhausted heroes.
"So... who won?"
A nephew smiled.
"Nobody."
"Why?"
"Because halfway through, everyone became one generation."
Old Uncle placed three steaming cups of kopi in front of the battered heroes.
"Same time next week?"
The three friends groaned together.
"Only if it's karaoke."
