Espionage threats, F1 return among key issues at Dewan Rakyat sitting today

GOVERNMENT efforts to counter espionage that could affect national security and Malaysia’s potential to host Formula 1 (F1) again are expected to dominate today’s Dewan Rakyat session.

According to Parliament’s Order Paper, Roy Angau Gingkoi (GPS–Lubok Antu) will ask the Home Minister to detail measures for preventing and addressing espionage activities threatening national security.

Meanwhile, Oscar Ling Chai Yew (PH–Sibu) is set to question the Youth and Sports Minister on Malaysia’s readiness to host F1 again and how the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) can be optimised to deliver national benefits.

Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN–Pengkalan Chepa) will seek clarification from the Prime Minister on whether Lembaga Tabung Haji continues to practise direct-negotiation procurement. Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS–Batang Sadong) will ask the Agriculture and Food Security Minister about plans to position Sarawak as a food security hub under the state’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030).

Dr Halimah Ali (PN–Kapar) is expected to raise concerns with the Works Minister on serious damage to key roads, including links to factories and access routes to Northport, caused by heavy vehicles and indiscriminate roadside parking. Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN–Bera) will question the Health Minister about the current threat level of COVID-19 variants to high-risk groups, following 57 deaths recorded last year.

After the question-and-answer session, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with the first readings of the Legal Aid and Public Defence Bill 2025, the Urban Renewal Bill 2025, and the Atomic Energy Licensing (Amendment) Bill 2025. The House will also continue the winding-up debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan motion.

The current sitting is scheduled to run for 24 days, concluding on Aug 28. - August 21, 2025
