ESPN analyst says blood tests are ‘very good’ after fifth cancer diagnosis

  • Longtime college basketball announcer Dick Vitale announced positive progress in his battle with cancer, his fifth diagnosis, stating that recent blood tests were "very good" and immunotherapy treatments are "very effective."
  • Vitale, 87, shared on social media that the treatments are successfully eliminating the cancer, following his April announcement of the latest diagnosis.
  • His cancer journey began in 2021 with melanoma, followed by lymphoma, vocal cord cancer in 2023, and lymph node cancer in 2024, which required surgery.
  • In recognition of his resilience, Vitale received the Jimmy V Award for perseverance in 2022, an honor named after his close friend and late college basketball coach Jim Valvano.
  • Vitale has been a dedicated fundraiser for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, co-founded by Valvano, and while he made limited appearances on ESPN last season, his plans for the upcoming season remain unannounced.
