SEMPORNA: Some 74 houses were inspected and 1,166 individuals screened for illegal immigrants and those suspected of involvement in cross-border crime in an integrated operation by Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) in squatter villages here.
New Esscom Commander DCP Victor Sanjos said the operation from June 20 June to 23 June aimed at crime prevention in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) to maintain the peace, security and well-being of the local community as well as tourists.
The operation also targeted settlements and areas identified as dominated by Pati. They included Pekan Semporna market, Kampung Perigi, Kampung Musalah, Kampung Bangau-Bangau, Kampung Sekolah Kebangsaan Pekan Dua and reflexology premises.
“Seven men were arrested, six under Section 51(5)(b) and one of them under Section 6(1)(c) of Immigration Act 1959/63.

Timber power poles estimated worth RM1,805 were seized and the Road Transport Department (RTD) issued six summonses for various offences.
The departments and agencies involved included police, Armed Forces, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Immigration, National Registration Department, Health Ministry, Customs, District Office, Rela, SESB, Fisheries Department, Forestry Department, Road Transport Department, Department of Ports and Harbors and Native Court.
Victor said Esscom would continue the operation in other districts to curb elements that may interfere with public safety and well-being.
