Representatives of European Union member countries and the European Parliament on Wednesday agreed to accelerate approval procedures for defence projects.

The plans provide for a maximum duration of approval procedures to be set at 102 working days.

If the competent authority has not taken a decision by that time, the application for approval is to be considered tacitly accepted.

EU countries can, however, add certain exceptions, for example for planned projects that could pose a serious risk to human health or national security, a press release said.

The agreement is part of a larger initiative meant to reduce the administrative burden on the defence industry and facilitate cross-border procurement and cooperation.

The new rules still need to be formally approved by EU countries and the European Parliament.
