Top EU officials on Monday welcomed the announced US-Iran deal to stop the conflict and called for its swift implementation.

"This agreement should allow for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote in a post on X.

"Freedom of navigation must be restored toll-free. This is essential for regional stability and the global economy.

But she added that the closing of the key waterway for energy traffic "carries a clear lesson" showing that "once again, energy dependencies have been weaponised."

"We must diversify our supply routes and develop alternative export corridors to diversify away from the bottleneck of Hormuz."

She also said the deal opens the door to a broader peace in the Middle East as "there can be no peace in the Middle East while Lebanon is in flames."

EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas and EU Council President António Costa, also writing on X, mentioned the EU's willingness to participate in stabilizing the region once hostilities have stopped.

"The European Union is ready to contribute to advancing a comprehensive strategy for lasting peace across the Middle East," Costa wrote.

Kallas said the EU has economic leverage, nuclear expertise and longstanding relationships with Gulf nations and "stands ready to contribute to a sustainable resolution."

US President Donald Trump, Pakistani negotiators and Iranian officials announced on Sunday that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement to pave the way to end their war after lengthy negotiations.

Few details of the deal have been released, but Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he would "authorize" the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and "authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade."

The deal is to be signed on Friday, according to Islamabad.
