Portugal is reaffirming its culinary appeal in Europe, with two festivals ranked among the continent’s best summer gastronomic events. From grilled sardines in the Algarve to Portuguese wines in Alenquer, the country continues to attract travellers seeking authentic local flavours and festive experiences.

Summer food festivals have become powerful drivers of tourism across Europe. They are no longer simply about showcasing a particular product or regional speciality; they offer a complete immersion in a destination’s heritage, traditions, local produce and way of life. According to a ranking published by the international travel website Big 7, Portugal appears twice in the Top 10 best summer food festivals in Europe, highlighting the growing prominence of Portuguese cuisine on the European foodie trail.

A European ranking based on visitor experience

To compile its list of the 25 Best Summer Food Festivals in Europe, Big 7 assessed a range of factors, including the overall visitor experience, accessibility, popularity among food-focused travellers, and the quality and distinctiveness of the local culinary offering.

The ranking therefore highlights events capable of creating a genuine atmosphere around gastronomy. It is not simply about enjoying good food; it is also about discovering a destination, meeting local producers, taking part in activities, and enjoying a festive and memorable experience.

In this context, Portugal stands out in particular. Two of its events secured places in the top ten: the Portimão Sardine Festival in the Algarve and Alma do Vinho in Alenquer.

The Portimão sardine festival in the Algarve

Ranked fourth, the Portimão Sardine Festival is one of the highlights of the Portuguese summer food calendar. Usually held in early August (although dates may vary from year to year), it celebrates one of southern Portugal’s most iconic products: the grilled sardine.

The Algarve has long been associated with this popular fish, traditionally served simply grilled and prepared according to Portuguese culinary customs. The festival gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy this speciality in a friendly atmosphere, in a city with deep ties to the sea and the fishing industry.

The event is regarded as the largest sardine festival in Europe. It attracts not only seafood enthusiasts but also visitors eager to discover an authentic aspect of Portuguese gastronomy. Alongside the food, the festival offers a lively programme of DJs and evening entertainment. This successful blend of local cuisine, music and celebration explains its high ranking.

Alma do Vinho in Alenquer: a tribute to Portuguese wine

Ranked sixth in the Top 10, Alma do Vinho ('Soul of Wine') celebrates another cornerstone of Portuguese gastronomy: wine.

Held each September, this wine festival attracts visitors from across Europe to celebrate Portugal’s wines and culinary traditions. The event features tastings, opportunities to meet producers, and discussions about their stories, expertise and the unique character of the wines on display.

This personal and educational dimension adds to the festival’s appeal, making it about far more than wine tasting alone; it is also a celebration of Portugal’s rich winemaking heritage.

Alma do Vinho is equally renowned for its lively and welcoming atmosphere. Barrel-rolling competitions, traditional folk dancing and grape-stomping activities all contribute to the experience. These events highlight the central role wine plays in Portuguese culture and give the festival a particularly strong identity.

With both Portimão and Alenquer represented in the Top 10, Portugal once again confirms its status as one of Europe’s most exciting destinations for lovers of summer food and wine festivals.
