Lately, I've noticed more EV charging stations around town—at malls, rest stops, and even some petrol stations. It's clear that Malaysia is gearing up for an electric future. But despite this infrastructure boom, I rarely see EVs on the road. It makes me wonder: Are we building the network faster than people are buying the cars?
As of October 2024, Malaysia had installed 3,354 EV charging stations, achieving about 33.5% of its target to have 10,000 chargers by the end of 2025. This includes both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) fast chargers. The government's push is commendable, aiming to support the anticipated rise in EV usage.
However, EV adoption seems to be lagging. In the first quarter of 2025, there were 6,827 EVs registered, marking a 45.6% increase from the same period in 2024. While this growth is significant, EVs still represent a small fraction of the total vehicle market.
Several factors might be contributing to this slow uptake. The upfront cost of EVs remains high for many Malaysians, even with existing tax incentives. Currently, fully imported EVs (CBUs) enjoy exemptions from import and excise duties until December 31, 2025, and locally assembled EVs (CKDs) have similar exemptions until 2027. There's also a personal income tax relief of up to RM2,500 for the installation or subscription of EV charging facilities at home, available until 2027.
Yet, despite these incentives, the high purchase price and concerns about driving range and charging accessibility may deter potential buyers. Moreover, the decision not to extend the road tax exemption for EVs beyond 2025 could further impact consumer interest.
It's encouraging to see the infrastructure being put in place, but perhaps more needs to be done to make EVs a viable option for the average Malaysian. Addressing cost barriers, expanding model availability, and ensuring reliable charging networks could help bridge the gap between infrastructure readiness and vehicle adoption.
