KUALA LUMPUR — Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal is disappointed and frustrated after discovering through social media that he had been left out of Malaysia’s squad for the FIFA Asean Cup, despite having featured prominently in the national team’s previous campaign.
The Sporting JAX midfielder, 28, admitted the manner in which he learnt of his omission was particularly disappointing, but refused to allow the setback to derail his international ambitions.
Rather than dwell on the decision, Kuzain said he would channel his disappointment into motivation to work harder and earn another opportunity with the Harimau Malaya.
“Of course, I am disappointed not to be called up. What is even more disappointing is finding out about it through social media.
“However, I need to work harder to become a regular in the team,” he said in a social media post.
Despite his disappointment, Kuzain maintained a professional attitude and threw his support behind the players selected to represent Malaysia.
“I wish the team all the best and cannot wait to support them,” he said.
Kuzain made his Malaysia debut in July when he came on as a substitute for Endrick dos Santos against Myanmar during the AFF Asean Cup campaign.
He then marked his second international appearance with a superb free-kick to help Malaysia secure a 4-0 victory over Laos at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium.
The midfielder was handed his first start for the national team against the Philippines and responded by providing the assist for G Pavithran’s only goal as Malaysia booked their place in the AFF Asean Cup semi-finals.
His latest omission therefore comes after a promising start to his international career, having featured in all three of Malaysia’s matches during the previous campaign.
Kuzain will now turn his attention to earning another call-up, with the midfielder determined to respond to the setback by raising his game and forcing his way back into the national team. - September 19, 2026
