Everton great Duncan Ferguson was sacked by Forest Green Rovers after having a request for Ray McKinnon to be hired turned down.
Many inside football questioned Ferguson taking the Forest Green job given the management of the club by owner Dale Vince.
Ferguson left the club last week, with his old No2 Tony Grant leaving for the Middle East.
The Sun says the Scot was willing to stay and had identified McKinnon as his new No2.
The Scot had even travelled south for talks, but was forced to return home after the club blocked Ferguson's move. It was then soon after Ferguson was shown the door.
