Everton are at risk of losing the funding of prospective owners 777 Partners.
The Daily Mail says the Premier League has informed 777 not to expect swift approval for their takeover of Everton.
The Premier League are still some way from completing due diligence on 777 due to the complexity of their ownership structure.
The American private equity firm have loaned Everton over 100m for operating costs since agreeing a deal to buy the club from Farhad Moshiri in September.
However, they will not continue funding past the New Year.
And without 777, Everton face trading as insolvent, so raising administration fears.
