Everton v Man City LIVE: Haaland’s two-word response as visitors collapse to hand Arsenal title race advantage

Manchester City conceded three goals in an extraordinary second-half collapse at Everton that hands Arsenal the advantage in the Premier League title race despite a late fightback that rescued a point.

Pep Guardiola’s side recovered to snatch a 3-3 draw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium but the damage was done when Everton substitute Thierno Barry scored a quickfire double either side of a Jake O’Brien header on a thrilling night.

Erling Haaland pulled one goal back before Jeremy Doku equalised in the 97th minute, but it still leaves Arsenal five points clear having played a game more than City and means Mikel Arteta’s side will be champions with three more wins.

Guardiola accepted City’s fate is no longer “in our hands” but Haaland was heard telling his team-mates the title is “still there” before facing Brentford on Saturday and Arsenal visiting relegation-threatened West Ham on Sunday.

69' GOAL! Barry punishes Guehi error to equalise [EVE 1-1 MCI]

23:31 , Richard Jolly

Two goals in four minutes and three in 12 means City need favours from West Ham, Burnley or Crystal Palace, Arsenal’s last three opponents. Their destiny is out of their hands now. When this seemed it would be a comfortable, professional win, it turned into an anarchic draw. And if City showed their spirit in a frantic finale, it was nevertheless them, rather than Arsenal, who lost their nerve in the run-in.

The turning point was an awful error from a player who had been almost impeccable in his City career. Everton’s equaliser could be attributed to a Moyes change, bringing on Thierno Barry for Beto, but it owed more to a horribly under-hit back-pass by Marc Guehi. The substitute advanced to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma. The striker had been flagged offside when Merlin Rohl tried to find him; but Guehi’s deliberate, if misjudged, intervention meant the goal stood. It was a gift.

David Moyes on Everton's fightback and late Man City equaliser

23:01 , Jamie Braidwood

Everton have conceded a goal after the 90th minute for the third Premier League game in a row, after conceding winners against Liverpool and West Ham and now an equaliser against Manchester City.

David Moyes’s side could have been in the race for Champions League without those dropped points. Mixed feeling for the Everton manager, speaking to Sky Sports:

“We let ourselves down because we defended the second goal so poorly. That was probably the main reason for it.

"But at half-time we would have taken this result because we were hugely outplayed in the first half.

"Getting a point against City is not a bad result, but when you're 3-1 up you think you're in with a great chance of winning."

Erling Haaland's two-word message to Man City team-mates

22:41 , Jamie Braidwood

Erling Haaland told his Manchester City team-mates that the title is “still there” despite his side’s dropped points at Everton in a dramatic encounter.

After Everton stunned the visitors with three goals in 12 minutes, Haaland sparked City’s late comeback with a goal straight from kick-off.

Jeremy Doku’s equaliser keeps City in the race, but only just: Arsenal will win the title if they win their next three games, starting with a trip to West Ham on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola gives his verdict on Jeremy Doku's late eqauliser

22:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Jeremy Doku’s late goal means Manchester City took at least a point from their collapse against Everton, even if it’s a huge blow to their title chances.

Guardiola told Sky Sports: "It's better than a loss. We played to win. It just shows what the team are. We tried and we have done it. It's not in our hands. Before it was in our hands. Now, no.

"We have to do it in our four games that we have in the Premier League. It will be quite similar against Brentford. We will see what happens."

Pep Guardiola: 'We're going to continue'

22:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports, praises Manchester City’s performance but says his side lost control of the second half. He says they will take the point and “continue”. He’s not giving up just yet.

"Really good performance. We played an outstanding first half. It was so difficult with their physicality.

"Second half, they made a step up. We didn't have as much control and we gave away the goal. After that they come back and make a proper English game, so aggressive in the duels.

"We take the point and until it's over, we're going to continue.”

The 12 minutes of mayhem where Man City threw the title race away

22:24 , Richard Jolly, at the Hill Dickinson Stadium

Manchester City refused to accept defeat and yet, in the final reckoning, it may be the game that means they are beaten. There were seconds remaining when Jeremy Doku curled in his second spectacular goal of an extraordinary evening. City still have not lost in the Premier League since January, but it may have been the night the title slipped from their grasp.

The winners were not Everton, though they were seconds away from their biggest scalp at Hill Dickinson, but an old Evertonian. If Mikel Arteta makes Arsenal champions, his debt to David Moyes and Everton will be still greater. It is definitively advantage Arsenal after in the title race after a stunning spell and a City collapse. Even their subsequent comeback, with two late goals, only reduced the damage done in the second half on Merseyside.

Arsenal's first Premier League title in 20 years is three games away

22:12 , Jamie Braidwood

As the dust settles, the simple fact is this: Arsenal are three wins from glory. Sunday’s trip to West Ham could be their toughest of the remaining fixtures, followed by relegated Burnley and a Crystal Palace side who may have a European final to prepare for.

How will the Arsenal team have followed that as they prepare for a Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid tomorrow?

HANG ON! THE GOAL STANDS! BARRY PUNISHES GUEHI’S BACK-PASS!

Wow! Drama. So, we need a rules expert to explain this. Barry was offside originally. But Guehi played on and made a deliberate attempt to pass back, which started a new phase of play. Barry is therefore onside again, and beats Donnarumma to equalise!

50 mins: Could the title race be decided by Beto? Everton's lone, and often lonely, striker has nevertheless got in behind the City defence a couple of times. With goal difference a factor, City have an incentive to look for a second goal. With both full-backs going forward, they are only leaving Guehi and Khusanov back to deal with Beto, who is a presence if not always a clinical finisher.

20:47 , Jamie Braidwood

44 mins: Now then... Michael Keane has clattered through Doku on the left wing. Keane was late and missed the ball. He is lucky to have no caught Doku further up his leg, as it was forceful enough to be a red.

GOAL! Everton 0-1 Man City (DOKU 43')

20:43 , Jamie Braidwood

THAT’S A STUNNING GOAL FROM JEREMY DOKU! SENSATIONAL!

In a first half low on quality, Doku has been the bright spark for City. This time, he produces end quality, too. A wonderful, curling finish into the top corner that leaves Jordan Pickford with no chance. Relief for City. They breakthrough a stubborn Everton defence at last.

As it stands, they will take Arsenal’s lead back down to three points.

Everton 0-0 Man City

20:41 , Richard Jolly, at the Hill Dickinson Stadium

40 mins: A distinct lack of ideas from City so far. Their main ploy is to aim for the low cutback in the box. The other one is for Nico O'Reilly to turn up in the centre-forward position. Nothing has worked yet, though.

18 mins: This is ridiculous... desperate stuff from Everton but they manage to get the block in as O’Reilly tries to wriggle towards goal. O’Brien is there.

4 mins: It’s very deep, very early from Everton. Cherki feeds Nunes after an underlapping run, but the full-back’s cross is cleared.

19:59 , Jamie Braidwood

Off we go! Manchester City start the game six points behind Arsenal, and with goals to make up after their 3-0 win over Fulham. But first, they need a win. Everton have other ideas and they need a result to keep their European hopes alive.

“Of course it could be better but I’ve never expected (help). We’ll do that and go game by game. The broadcasters, Premier League, whoever, decides. We will be there with 11 players plus people on the bench.”

Man City feel Premier League ignoring rules amid fixture pile-up frustration

18:37 , Richard Jolly

Last week, Manchester City were frustrated to find they will have to play three games in six days in the title run-in after two rearranged games were announced either side of the FA Cup final.

City believe the Premier League’s principle for rescheduling matches has not been followed as it was announced they will host Crystal Palace on 13 May and travel to Bournemouth on 19 May.

In between, Pep Guardiola’s team, who are battling with Arsenal to become champions, visit Wembley on 16 May for the FA Cup final against Chelsea, giving them two trips to the south.

City feel their match against Palace, which was due to be played on the weekend when Guardiola’s side instead beat Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final, had not been rearranged sooner.

David Moyes praises fit-again Beto ahead of facing Man City

18:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Everton boss David Moyes has praised the attitude of Beto after confirming the Portugal striker is available to face Manchester City after a concussion.

Beto had been involved in every one of Everton’s matches this season before missing last weekend’s loss at West Ham having sustained swelling below his eye in the Merseyside derby.

That interrupted a strong run of form from Beto, who has scored seven goals since the turn of the year, four in his last three appearances.

“Even today, he’s always asking and trying to find out where and if we thought he could do better,” Moyes said. “Other staff members work with him individually as well, because that’s what he actually wants, he wants extra work and he wants to try and get better.

“It’s great when you work with people who are always trying to improve and trying to step up. He’s started to score a few goals and we hope he can continue that.”

Pep Guardiola: I still have ‘incredible energy’ for Man City job in treble bid

18:03 , Jamie Braidwood

Pep Guardiola still has “incredible energy” for his job at Manchester City and feels calmer despite the pressures of a treble challenge.

There has been speculation throughout the season Guardiola could leave City this summer after a decade in charge but he continues to speak warmly about the club.

“I wouldn’t be 10 years, even with good titles, if I didn’t have this incredible environment,” the City manager said.

“I still have incredible energy, still I’m so good, coming here to work on my days off.

“Of course we’re here because we won a lot – and that’s why they don’t fire you, because they continue to trust you – but apart from that, the club is really, really extraordinary.”

Manchester City are on a roll in title race - but goal difference becomes a factor

17:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City have hit *that* run of form towards the end of the season and have won six matches in a row in all competitions. But their last three wins, against Arsenal, Burnley and Southampton, have all come by one goal. If Arsenal and Manchester City win their remaining games, the title will come down to goal difference.

With that in mind, City need to respond to Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Fulham. Arsenal’s goal difference of +41 is now four better than Manchester City’s +37, but that would come down if Pep Guardiola’s side win their two games in hand.

Everton's push for European football hits a roadblock

Everton are winless in their last three in the Premier League to lose momentum in the race for European football. The Toffees suffered late heartbreak when they lost to rivals Liverpool at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, conceding to Virgil van Dijk’s header, and then lost late against West Ham last time out when Callum Wilson struck at the death.

The results mean Everton have dropped to 11th in the table, but they are still only five points off a European place. A win tonight would see them go level on points with Brighton and above Chelsea into 9th.

The pressure is on Manchester City to remain in touch with Arsenal in the Premier League title race as they face a potentially tricky trip to Everton.

Mikel Areta’s side took care of business against Fulham to open their advantage to six points at the top of the table and boosted their goal difference, with their title rivals now looking to reply in kind.

It’ll be a busy end to the league campaign for Pep Guardiola and his squad with five league games still to play as well as the FA Cup final, but a slip-up here could well prove costly.

Everton still have plenty to play for, too, in a congested chase for European places. They sit 11th after the weekend’s results.
