This July, I celebrated my 77th birthday. It was not just one celebration, but two—one with my brothers and sisters and their spouses at the beautiful Orchard Resort in Melaka, and another in Kota Kinabalu with my wife and our daughter’s family, including our two beloved grandchildren.
As I reflected on these joyful occasions, one thought kept returning to me:
Every birthday we celebrate at our age is a bonus.

When we are young, birthdays are about presents, parties and excitement. As we grow older, they take on a much deeper meaning. They remind us that life itself is a precious gift and that every additional year is a blessing never to be taken for granted.
This year, I celebrated not only another birthday but also something many people overlook—good health.
At 77, I can honestly say that, health-wise, I am “as good as it can get” for someone my age. Years of regular exercise, especially hiking Bukit Kiara, eating sensibly and maintaining an active lifestyle have paid handsome dividends. Good health is one of life’s greatest blessings, yet we often appreciate it only after it begins to fade.
My birthday was, in many ways, a celebration of health, gratitude and family.
Our time in Kota Kinabalu reminded me that the greatest luxury in life is not a five-star resort but having the people you love around you.
We cycled together, swam together, shared meals and simply enjoyed one another’s company. Cycling again after almost sixty years was something I never imagined I would experience. It reminded me that while age may slow us down, it need not stop us from embracing life.
One evening became especially memorable. Our daughter and son-in-law graciously gave my wife and me the opportunity to spend the evening alone with our two grandchildren. The four of us enjoyed what felt like a candle-light dinner that lasted almost two and a half hours. There was no rush—just stories, conversations, laughter and the simple joy of being together.
Those two and a half hours became one of the most precious gifts of my birthday.
During the holiday, my granddaughter surprised me with a handwritten birthday card. Its heartfelt message contained words that would make any grandparent proud. As I read it, I realised that the greatest legacy we leave behind is not our achievements, titles or possessions, but the love we share, the values we live by and the inspiration we provide to those who come after us.
The celebration in Melaka was equally memorable, though in a very different way.
My brothers and sisters—and their spouses—are all busy with their own lives. The fact that they willingly set aside their commitments to celebrate my birthday together was itself a priceless gift.

Orchard Resort proved to be the perfect venue. Surrounded by acres of fruit trees, we arrived at the peak of the fruit season. The resort management generously invited guests to enjoy the fruits free of charge. Everywhere we walked were rambutans, mangosteens and the famous Musang King durians. Our walks soon became delightful fruit-hunting adventures. The more we walked, the more fruits we discovered, making exercise an enjoyable reward in itself. Even the wellness pool seemed reserved just for us, providing a peaceful place to relax and unwind.
Yet perhaps the greatest enjoyment came after dinner.
For two consecutive evenings, we sat together sharing real-life experiences and amusing anecdotes—what Malaysians affectionately call cerita-cerita. One story led to another. There was laughter, gentle teasing and endless questions, especially from the ladies, who could hardly wait to hear how each story ended. Those evenings reminded me that growing older does not diminish our sense of humour, curiosity or capacity for joy.
These celebrations reinforced an important truth.
As we age, material possessions gradually lose their appeal. We begin to value moments over money, relationships over riches, and experiences over expensive gifts.
I have also come to realise that loving family relationships are among the most powerful and enduring sources of happiness. The affection we share, the memories we create and the time we willingly give one another become increasingly precious with each passing year.
Life is full of uncertainties. None of us knows what tomorrow will bring.
That is why we should cherish, appreciate, protect and love our family members unconditionally while they are still with us. Too often we postpone family gatherings, believing there will always be another opportunity. Sadly, life does not always give us that privilege.
At 77, I have learnt to appreciate every second of my life.
Life is measured not merely by the number of years we live, but by the moments that touch our hearts and remain with us forever.
Someone once said, “We do not remember days; we remember moments.”
My 77th birthday celebrations will certainly remain one of those treasured moments.
To my fellow seniors, continue investing in your health, because good health gives us the freedom to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Continue investing in your family, because loving relationships are life’s greatest source of happiness. And continue creating memories, because they become the treasures that enrich our lives long after the moments themselves have passed.
Every sunrise is a gift. Every birthday is a bonus.
Life is short. Make your remaining golden years truly count.
And above all, never stop appreciating the countless blessings that still surround you. For in the end, a life well lived is not measured by how much we owned, but by how deeply we loved, how gratefully we lived, and how fondly we will be remembered.
