Based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling 2017 novel, the film follows Monique Grant, a relatively unknown journalist who is unexpectedly chosen by ageing Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo to write her biography.
As Evelyn recounts her rise to fame, seven marriages, career-defining scandals and great romances, Monique gradually discovers that the actress’s story is connected to her own life in ways she never imagined.
According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the film centres on a long-awaited interview in which Evelyn pulls back the curtain on her seven marriages while revealing shocking truths about herself and those around her.

The screenplay of the adaptation is being written by Liz Tigelaar, whose previous credits include Little Fires Everywhere (2020). Current script revisions are being handled by Francesca Sloane, known for her work on Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) and Fargo (2014).
Author Taylor Jenkins Reid remains involved as an executive producer. The film is being produced by Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions, Brad Mendelsohn for Circle Management + Productions and David Hinojosa.
