KUALA LUMPUR - A former chairman of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) and a former Treasury secretary-general were brought to the Magistrate's Court here today for remand proceedings following a high-profile investigation sparked by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report into the pilgrim fund.
The two suspects, both in their 60s, arrived at 9.31 am escorted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers and wearing the agency’s signature orange lockup attire.
Also present at the court was a former TH chief executive officer who had previously been remanded on Aug 21 to assist with the ongoing probe.
MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman confirmed that the two former senior figures were picked up at 4 pm yesterday after showing up for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
The wave of arrests comes in the wake of the 211-page TH RCI report, which was declassified and made public on July 29 after a deep dive into the institution's operations between 2014 and 2020.
The report laid bare systemic management and governance failures that led to severe financial strain at the pilgrimage fund. Key findings that triggered enforcement action include:
Problematic Investments & Hidden Losses: The report highlighted suspicious transaction approvals, manipulation of investment reports, and high-risk deals involving 14 companies that severely eroded asset values.
Creative Accounting & Hibah Crisis: Investigations revealed that TH used non-standard accounting methods between 2014 and 2017 to overstate asset values and pay out high dividends (hibah) despite actual liabilities exceeding assets.
Concealment of Material Info: The panel uncovered evidence of deliberately suppressed financial information, unapproved bonus payouts, and transactions executed without proper guarantees or collateral.
The findings prompted government agencies, including the MACC, to launch full forensic audits and criminal investigations into those responsible for managing the fund during the period under review. - August 27, 2026
