Division B police have arrested former police officer Tejinder Singh in connection with a firing incident in Kot Atma Ram that left an AAP leader, Jaipal Singh, among two people injured.
Ravinder Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (East), said the accused was produced in court and remanded to one-day police custody for further investigation. Tejinder Singh, along with unidentified accomplices, has been booked on charges of attempt to murder and under the Arms Act.
The incident occurred on Thursday after a minor dispute over the parking of a Thar vehicle escalated into violence, with two groups led by Tejinder Singh and Jaipal Singh allegedly opening fire at each other.
Apart from Jaipal Singh, Narinder Singh, a tenant of Tejinder Singh who runs a spare parts shop near the spot, also sustained a bullet injury.
According to police, the incident stemmed from an argument over parking near Pathra Wala Park. Karan, son of injured AAP leader Jaipal Singh, had allegedly parked his car near the location when Tejinder Singh, a retired police employee residing opposite the park, objected and asked him to move it so he could park his own vehicle.
Narinder Singh, along with his son, also joined the argument, which soon escalated into a heated verbal exchange between both sides.
The situation turned violent when members of both groups allegedly drew their licensed pistols and opened fire. During the exchange, a shot allegedly fired from Jaipal Singh’s side hit Narinder Singh in the leg, while Tejinder Singh allegedly fired at Jaipal Singh, injuring him in the leg.
Station House Officer Baljinder Singh said investigations are ongoing and CCTV footage is being examined.
