Former Manchester United defender Kevin Moran has paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton.

The United icon passed away yesterday at the age of 86.

"Think of Manchester United and you will always think of Bobby Charlton," Moran told the Sunday World.

"When you look at what built United's reputation as a massive club around the world, it was the tragedy of the Munich air crash and the European Cup win in 1968, with George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton making that happen.

"Bobby was synonymous with both of those events and he also played a key role in England's World Cup win in 1966, which completed his legacy.

"From my experience at United, he was always a quiet presence behind the scenes at the club and was always brought out in his ambassador role when required.

"Bobby's name was massive around the world and United used that to their advantage down the years.

"He would often have a quiet word with the players in my time at the club, but he was very much in the background and didn't get too involved in my time there.

"His presence alone reminded us all what it meant to be a Manchester United player."
