Former Newcastle United first team coach Steve Stone has heaped praise on Sean Longstaff.

After a difficult time following his breakthrough in the first team at a young age, Longstaff is now established as a key player for the Magpies.

The 25-year-old can become the “complete no.8" in midfield according to Stone.

Speaking for BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra during the Magpies' League Cup quarter final win over Leicester, he said: "Going back to Longstaff, I think the form he's been on this season has been excellent. He's another one of these players that's really improved [under Eddie Howe].

"He played more of a deeper role under the last couple of managers, I think under Steve Bruce he didn't play as much as he is now, whether that was because of injuries or if he couldn't get into the team I'm not sure.

"Before that with [Rafa] Benitez, he played much more of a holding role, he was more of a guy that got onto the ball, made the plays happen and dictated.

"Now he's in this number eight role, he's further forward and pressing, using all of his energy and he's been absolutely terrific this season with that. If he could just add some goals to his game, he'd become a complete midfielder in that number eight position."
