According to reports, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is set to summon a former top government leader and his principal private secretary to aid in an investigation related to the alleged embezzlement of millions of ringgit in government funds.

The individual in question is currently under scrutiny for suspected possession of assets and businesses derived from questionable profits. Sources have revealed that the MACC's investigation encompasses not only the ex-leader but also the wealth of his family members, including his wife and children.

It is alleged that the former top leader, who also serves as a patron of a foundation, misused government funds by approving projects involving public funding, particularly during the period when the country was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is anticipated that the ex-leader and his right-hand man will be summoned by MACC within this week for questioning. The investigation will likely be conducted under the ambit of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA 2001) and the MACC Act 2009.

Additionally, MACC is reportedly investigating another former high-ranking national leader who is suspected of utilizing government funds to bail out his son's business, resulting in significant losses suffered by a prominent petroleum company since 1979.

The petroleum company is believed to have been manipulated to rescue financially troubled government-linked companies (GLCs). Apart from the high-ranking leader, business tycoons have also come under the radar of MACC in connection with this investigation.

In a separate development, it has been disclosed that the police will be handing over the investigation into the alleged abuse of government funding amounting to RM700 million for advertising and publicity to the MACC. The police will be issuing an official letter to MACC on this matter. The abuse of funds for government advertisements and publicity between 2020 and 2022 was highlighted in a police report lodged by UMNO's communications director at the Setapak police station.

As the investigation unfolds, the summoning of these individuals by MACC underscores the commitment to combat corruption and investigate alleged financial improprieties at the highest levels of government. The outcome of these investigations will likely have significant implications for Malaysia's political landscape and integrity in public office.
