Ex-police officer who detained suspected shoplifter charged with GBH

  • A former Dorset Police officer, Lorne Castle, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after intervening to detain a suspected shoplifter.
  • The 47-year-old is accused of seriously injuring Daniel Meyrick during an altercation outside the Castlepoint shopping centre in Bournemouth, Dorset, on June 19 last year.
  • The incident took place a couple of weeks after Castle had left his position as a Police Constable with Dorset Police, and he was reportedly seen pinning the individual to the ground.
  • Castle was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service with one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, under section 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, following an investigation by Thames Valley Police.
  • He is scheduled to appear for the first time at Reading Magistrates’ Court on May 27 to face the charge.
