Liverpool have entered talks with Jorg Schmadtke about taking the sporting director's post at Anfield.
Liverpool are seeking to fill the position as Julian Ward departs at the end of the season.
Schmadtke, 59, was recently with Wolfsburg before leaving at the start of February. He spent over four years with VfL.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has stated: "Pretty much everyone has a sporting director because it makes sense."
Schmadtke is a former goalkeeper.
