SHAH ALAM, June 26 - Very heavy rain within a short period in the Sungai Langat basin caused the bund breach near Kampung Rancangan Tanah Belia (RTB) Bukit Changgang in Kuala Langat yesterday, said the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS).
In a statement, it said river waters rose to 4.7m, above the danger level of 4.2m, overcoming and eroding the bund.
“Very heavy rain in the Sungai Langat upstream basin area (led to) the highest rain station reading in Pekan Bangi Lama, at an intensity of 122mm in less than three hours,” it added.
It also said three roving pumps have been deployed to help floodwaters recede.
Selangor JPS also said it is upgrading the bund, with works to be done by January, and that two out of four flooded areas are locations of long-term flood mitigation projects.
“The (progress of the) bund upgrading and reinforcement project at Kampung RTB Bukit Changgang is at 24.5 per cent, while the drainage system upgrading project in Kampung Bangi Lama is in the design stage,” it explained.
Meanwhile, the Kuala Langat branch of the Public Works Department (JPJ) said it has isolated power supply in the flooded areas as a precaution.
“The electricity supply to streetlight feeder pillars and traffic light controllers was isolated to reduce the risk of electrocution and to ensure public safety,” it said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Kuala Langat JKR also urged the public to remain vigilant, follow instructions from the authorities and avoid travelling through flooded areas.
According to a Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) statement today, floodwaters are starting to recede, with levels at 0.6m at 9.30am.
A temporary relief centre nearby is sheltering 546 flood victims from 250 households.
Yesterday, the Sungai Langat bund burst in the heavy rain and waters flooded at least 32 homes in Taman Langat Utama 2.
Among the affected areas are Jalan Pudina 2, Jalan Pudina 40, Jalan Pudina 41, Jalan LG2/10, Jalan LG2/12, and Jalan Pudina 7.
