SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — The state government has ordered the local authorities to promptly resolve the issue of illegal dumping sites in areas under their respective administration.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Datuk Ng Suee Lim said over 100 illegal dumping sites have currently been identified throughout Selangor, including in and around Klang, Gombak, and Serdang.
“We ask the local authorities to monitor this issue from time to time and conduct operations against these sites. If necessary, take appropriate action to resolve this issue promptly.
“Similarly, we warn relevant parties, especially operators, not to engage contractors who are not registered with the local authorities,” he told SelangorKini.
Ng added the state government also intend to amend the Local Government Council Bylaws to impose heavier penalties on offenders.
Earlier today, the councillor accompanied personnel from KDEB Waste Management, the Klang Royal City Council, and the Selangor Water Management Authority, during their raid on a five-hectare illegal dumping site at Sungai Serdang, Kapar.
Commenting on the raid, he said six raids have been conducted at the dumping site thus far, besides the seizure of lorries.
“Over 700 tonnes of industrial waste like cables and plastics have been removed from this illegal site for the past three years.
“We have issued a 7A notice to the landowners. Land seizure will be carried out if they persist.
“To ensure this issue does not recur, enforcement officers have installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the dumping site,” Ng said.
