SHAH ALAM, July 8 — A total of 243 next-of-kin have received RM1,000 in death compensation under the Khairat Darul Ehsan (KDE) Scheme as of June.
State executive councillor for women empowerment and social welfare Anfaal Saari said the highest number of recipients were individuals aged between 61 and 70, followed by those aged 71 to 80.
“Since its introduction this year, the scheme has been open to individuals aged 50 and above as well as disabled persons. As of June, 243 next-of-kin have claimed benefits under this scheme.
“We do not intend to amend the eligibility criteria and will maintain the minimum age at 50 to ensure the scheme is well-managed and sustainable.
“Existing beneficiaries under state welfare programmes such as the Mesra Usia Emas Scheme (SMUE) and Iltizam Selangor Sihat (ISS) are automatically registered under the KDE scheme upon their consent,” she said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session today.
Through this year’s budget, the state government has allocated RM20 million to implement the scheme, targeting 20,000 people expected to benefit from the initiative.
In May 2019, the bereavement assistance for senior citizens under SMUE was discontinued, before being reinstated in 2021.
In that year’s budget, Menteri Besar Dato Seri’ Amirudin Shari announced a RM7.5 million allocation to enable registered next-of-kin under Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor to receive RM500 in aid.
The enhanced KDE scheme now offers higher compensation and covers a broader target group, as part of the state administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of its people.
