SHAH ALAM, July 10 — The water tariff increase currently being considered by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is not a new application, but rather part of a submission made last year.
State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said the application is crucial to ensure that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd can continue operating effectively and delivering quality services to consumers across the state.
“This application is not new; it is a continuation of the first phase, which was previously approved. The proposed rate is also reasonable and is still under final consideration by SPAN,” he said.

Izham was speaking to the press after the State Legislative Assembly session at the State Secretariat Building today.
He added that any increase in tariff implemented will not burden the low-income group (B40), particularly recipients of the Darul Ehsan Water Scheme (Sade) or users who consume less than 20 cubic metres per month.
The primary purpose of the tariff adjustment is to encourage more prudent water usage among consumers, while the state government will continue to monitor the process to ensure that any implementation is fair and takes into account the needs of all parties.
Yesterday, SPAN confirmed that it had received applications to review water supply service tariff rates from service operators in 10 states under its jurisdiction.
However, it is still reviewing the applications from Penang, Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, and Pahang, before any decision is made.
