FREEDOM of speech is a cornerstone of democracy, but it must be exercised with responsibility, warns Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, a member of Malaysia’s National Unity Advisory Council.
Speaking out against the misuse of speech to provoke or insult, Lee stressed such actions undermine democratic principles and pose a threat to national stability.
Lee expressed his full support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call to end all forms of racial and religious mockery, as well as any inflammatory rhetoric that could disrupt the peace and unity of Malaysia’s diverse society.
In a statement issued today, Lee said, “Malaysia has long been built on mutual respect, tolerance, and understanding among its various communities.
“The recent incidents involving racially and religiously charged remarks, along with insensitive actions from certain individuals, pose a serious risk to the very foundation of our unity.”
He stressed that unchecked, these actions could foster division, fuel hatred, and even lead to violence.
Lee also urged political leaders, public figures, and social media users to be cautious with their words and avoid spreading messages that could incite hostility. Instead, he encouraged the amplification of messages promoting inclusivity and respect.
“The authorities must take firm action against those who seek to disrupt peace through hateful rhetoric. In these challenging times, unity is our greatest strength. Let us come together to celebrate Malaysia's diversity as a source of pride and strength, not division,” Lee added.
On March 6, Prime Minister Anwar reiterated his message, urging all parties to refrain from exploiting opportunities to stir up racial sentiments and spread hatred. - March 8, 2025
