Experts say Heathrow third runway should only be approved on this condition

  • The Climate Change Committee has warned that Heathrow Airport's proposed third runway should only proceed if the aviation industry commits to significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
  • To achieve net zero, advisers recommended measures like sustainable fuels and carbon capture, which could raise long-haul return ticket prices by up to £400 by 2050.
  • The CCC report highlighted that Heathrow is responsible for half of UK aviation emissions and warned that expansion could account for 6.9 per cent of the country's remaining carbon emissions by 2050.

  • The Department for Transport stated that any expansion must align with net zero targets, balancing environmental commitments with economic and job growth.
