In a revealing interview, British journalist Clare Rewcastle Brown, known for her groundbreaking reports on Malaysia’s 1MDB scandal, opened up about the intense challenges she faced while exposing high-level corruption. Rewcastle Brown, who founded the Sarawak Report to spotlight critical issues in Malaysia, described years of surveillance, hacking attempts, and even efforts by Malaysian authorities to use an Interpol red notice to have her detained.
Reflecting on her past struggles, she recounted, “It’s easy to forget now, but in the early days, I was constantly under attack.” At the time, Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s administration was powerful, and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was imprisoned. Her revelations unveiled deep layers of corruption, sparking global investigations and thrusting Malaysia into the international spotlight. Despite facing significant legal and personal risks, Rewcastle Brown continued her work, which contributed to Malaysia's evolving political landscape and bolstered the call for media freedom.
In recent years, Rewcastle Brown faced a defamation lawsuit from the Terengganu Sultan’s wife, resulting in a court order to pay RM435,000. In response, a wave of support emerged from the Malaysian public, who helped cover the substantial costs. “There’s been immense generosity from ordinary Malaysians who wanted to ensure my co-defendants and I didn’t bear the entire financial burden,” she shared, expressing both gratitude and sadness that the burden fell on the public.
When asked about Malaysia's new whistleblower protections and whether her prosecution impacted these reforms, Rewcastle Brown pointed to the challenges posed by defamation laws. “Defamation laws are often used to silence the media,” she noted, emphasizing how powerful figures can stifle reporting on public interest issues. During the 1MDB scandal, she was nearly alone in her investigations, facing defamation threats from individuals linked to the scandal who sought to halt her reporting.
Describing her experience, Rewcastle Brown revealed that she was under 24-hour surveillance, with her communications constantly targeted by hackers. She also discussed her ongoing interest in Malaysian affairs, despite living abroad due to a pending prison sentence in the country. “I still follow issues in Malaysia. Initially, I wanted to create space for local media to take the lead. Malaysian journalists are now better positioned to report freely, which wasn’t the case during 1MDB.”
The conversation shifted to her home state, Sarawak, where Rewcastle Brown voiced her concern for the rights of indigenous communities and the protection of Sarawak’s rainforests. These forests, among the most biodiverse on the planet, face increasing exploitation from logging. While Sarawak’s administration has promised conservation efforts, Rewcastle Brown remains cautiously optimistic. “Real change requires tackling illegal logging and respecting genuine environmental criticism.”
Discussing Malaysia’s role as ASEAN chair under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Rewcastle Brown believes the country should lead ASEAN efforts to resist external pressures on natural resources. With Indonesia’s development in Nusantara, Borneo's environmental sustainability remains at risk. She urged that Sarawak and Sabah prioritize local welfare over resource extraction, especially given Borneo’s vital role as a “lung” of the planet.
As Rewcastle Brown continues to monitor Malaysia’s progress, her hope is that Sarawak and Sabah can lead regional sustainability, inspiring a global approach to environmental preservation. Her journey underscores the resilience and courage required to advocate for transparency and justice in the face of powerful opposition.
